What is a mud hen?
Is it a duck or is it a chicken? A mud hen is actually a marsh bird with short wings and long legs that inhabits swamps and marshes. This bird has also been called a marsh hen, rail, and coot. The Toledo baseball club first adopted the nickname the “Mud Hens” in 1896. At that time, the team played at Bay View Park where the surrounding marshland was frequented by these unique birds.
